Psalm 23:4-6

Listen how an ancient psalm in the Bible can speak to us in recovery.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, In recovery we can relate. Life and our poor choices takes us through dark painful times of suffering.  We may feel like we were dying or there’s no reason to go on living.  St. John called it the dark night of the soul. It’s real. But…

I will fear no evil, Because, we have turned our lives and will over to the care of God, the good shepherd.  Therefore, in the midst of suffering we can choose not to fear the evil & pain we feel.  Why?

For you are with me; This changes everything.  We are no longer alone trying to figure out how to get out of our mess.  Jesus, our good shepherd is watching, ready to guide, fight & deliver us.  Check out John 10:11-13 to learn the mind of a good shepherd.

Your rod & staff, they comfort me. The rod is used as defense to ward off enemies plus to discipline & correct us.  The staff is used to guide us. And God knows exactly how to direct us away from temptation and the pit we so often fall into.  If you want comfort, then let’s open our hearts to accept the protection available from God’s rod & staff. This is a visual of steps 6 & 7.

You prepare a table before me, in the presence of my enemies. I love this.  God does not always remove us from our struggles but even then, in the midst of our mess God provides good things for us.  He prepares a table to bless us. Do you see it?

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  This is an ancient ample or profuse blessing. With the anointing as a symbol of God’s Spirit, the power needed to follow Jesus existing within us.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, Jesus said he came to connect us to the Father and give us an abundant life.

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. We are a part of God’s family.  When we choose God (love does not force us) we will be with God forever.
